*** COACHING MILESTONE for RICHARDS!! ***
Mason boys basketball coach Greg Richards is an extremely humble man and not one to seek any attention to himself, but on Tuesday night at Middletown, he reached a coaching milestone that wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) go unnoticed. The Comets 68-57 win over the Middies helped their head coach win the 300th victory of his illustrious 21-year career and they’ve all come as a Comet.
Richards was presented the game ball at the end of the contest by Middletown AD Gary Lebo. A special presentation is planned for Mason’s home game this Friday to honor his accomplishment.
As you might expect from Coach Richards, he gave all the credit to his players and coaching assistants and how special it would be to go undefeated in the GMC. His coaching tenure has left a legacy of success not only for the Comet program but influenced the careers of many others.
Seven of Richards’ former assistant coaches have gone on to varsity head coaching jobs. There’s Rob Matula, Mason’s girls head coach; Curt Bly, former assistant and now Mason’s head baseball coach; Scott Kerr, who has coached at Mariemont, Clark Montessori and now is the head coach at Purcell; Casey Popplewell, who served as the boys head coach at Monroe before returning this year to Mason as the JV coach; Chris DeLotell, head boys coach at Anderson; Andy Keimer, head coach at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy; Mike Arlinghaus, a former player for Matula at Talawanda, assistant for Richards and now head coach at Waynesville; and Rob Reis, the new Loveland boys basketball coach.
Richards was inducted into the Mason High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002. He has been the varsity boys’ basketball coach at Mason since the 1995-96 season.
Mason won three consecutive league titles from 2005-07 while a member of the FAVC. Richards was named the coach of the year for each of those seasons, an honor he also received last year as the GMC Coach of the Year.
